Why climb Pidurangala?
Pidurangala is the rock just north of Sigiriya. From its flat summit you look straight across the jungle at the Lion Rock, which is the one view you can't get while you're standing on Sigiriya. It opens early enough for sunrise, the ticket costs about a tenth of Sigiriya's, and the climb is short.
The catch: the last 10 minutes are a scramble over and under boulders, with no steps. Most people manage it fine. Read the climb before you decide.
Pidurangala sunrise: when to leave
Sunrise moves by about 40 minutes through the year. Pick your month and we'll work backwards from it.
Sunrise times are approximate for mid month. For the exact time, check a weather app the night before.
Pidurangala ticket price & dress code
Pay at the small ticket office by the temple at the bottom. In 2026 it's about LKR 1,000 for foreigners (around US$3), in cash only (confirm). Sri Lankans visit free or leave a donation. The money goes to the temple.
Pidurangala is an active Buddhist monastery, so cover your shoulders and knees on the lower part of the climb. If you're in shorts, they'll lend you a sarong at the office for free. Take your shoes off where the signs ask, and never turn your back to a Buddha statue for a photo.
The climb, in three parts
- Temple steps · 10 to 15 minUneven stone steps through the forest, past the old temple buildings. Steady but easy.
- The reclining Buddha · 5 min moreA long brick reclining Buddha under a rock overhang, partly restored. It's a good place to catch your breath.
- The boulder scramble · 10 minThe path turns into a squeeze between boulders. You'll use your hands, step up high, and crawl under one rock. There's no railing. Then you pop out on the open summit.
Sunrise or sunset?
Both are beautiful. They're just different mornings and evenings.
Sunrise
- The sun comes up behind you and lights Sigiriya's face
- Mist in the valleys from November to February
- Cooler, but the scramble is done by torchlight
- Busy on top, with 50 to 100 people in high season
Sunset
- Warm light across the whole plain
- You climb in daylight, which is easier on the scramble
- Hot on the way up, so start about 1.5 hours before sunset
- You come down in the dark, so bring a torch
Doing both rocks? Climb Pidurangala at sunrise and Sigiriya the next morning at 7:00, or the same afternoon after a rest. See our Sigiriya Rock guide for tickets and hours.
What to bring
- A head torch, or your phone torch and a free hand, for sunrise.
- Shoes with grip. Flip flops will make the scramble miserable.
- Water and a small snack. There's nothing to buy at the top.
- A sarong or long trousers, though the office will lend one.
- Cash for the ticket.
