Why it's worth the trip

High on a granite outcrop above Dambulla town, five caves have been Buddhist shrines for more than 2,000 years. Inside, nearly every surface is painted, and the caves hold more than 150 Buddha statues, from small seated figures to a 14 metre reclining Buddha carved from the rock. It's been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.

It's one of the most atmospheric places in Sri Lanka. Go early, before the tour groups, when the incense is fresh and the monks are chanting.

Dambulla ticket price & the ticket trap

Buy your ticket at the bottom. The ticket office is by the big golden Buddha (the Golden Temple museum) on the main road, not at the cave entrance. Plenty of people climb to the top, get turned away, and walk all the way down again.

Sources in 2026 put the foreigner ticket at between LKR 1,500 and 2,500. Confirm the current price. The site is usually open 7:00 to 19:00, but the ticket office may close earlier, around 17:00, so don't leave it late.

The five caves

They're numbered left to right along the terrace. Tap one to see what not to miss.

No photos with your back to a Buddha, and no flash. Small donations go in the boxes, not to anyone who offers to "guide" you inside.

How to visit

  1. Arrive at opening, before the coaches. Buy your ticket at the office by the golden Buddha.
  2. Walk up the sloping rock path, about 15 to 20 minutes. Watch your bags around the monkeys.
  3. Leave your shoes at the stall by the gate. The rock gets hot by mid morning, so socks help.
  4. The five caves, taking your time. Then the terrace view back towards Sigiriya.
  5. Walk down, and look into the Dambulla produce market or head back for breakfast.

What to wear

Cover your shoulders and knees: no vests, short skirts or shorts. Bring a sarong or scarf to wrap around you if needed. Take off hats before you enter the caves, and remove your shoes at the gate.

Fitting it into your trip

  • On the way in or out: Dambulla sits on the road from Kandy, so most people stop here as they arrive in or leave Sigiriya. Your driver will wait.
  • The same morning as Sigiriya: climb the rock at 7:00, then visit Dambulla late morning. Shoes off on hot rock at noon is no fun, so go before 11.
  • The Dambulla market: Sri Lanka's biggest wholesale fruit and vegetable market is in town, a chaotic and colourful 20 minute stop.
